Why High Performers Still Feel Stuck with Hannah Kissell, Executive Life Coach

“If you’re solving the wrong problem, no amount of effort will create the result you want.”

Did you know that 77% of professionals have experienced burnout at their current job, and nearly 1 in 2 high performers report feeling constantly overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted?

At the same time, organisations are investing more than ever in performance, capability and leadership development. And yet…people still feel stuck.

Still stretched.
Still searching for clarity.
Still working harder without seeing the breakthrough they expected.

This is the paradox of modern leadership:

We’ve never been more driven - and yet so many feel deeply disconnected.

The Real Problem Leaders Aren’t Seeing

As leaders, we’re taught to focus on what we can see:

Performance.
Behaviour.
Output.

But what if the real problem isn’t visible?

In this episode of The Uncharted Leader, I sit down with Executive Life Coach Hannah Kissel to explore a truth that challenges everything most high performers believe:

You’re not stuck because you lack capability.
You’re stuck because you’re solving the wrong problem.

Because beneath the surface of burnout and overwhelm sits something far more powerful:

  • The system you’re operating in

  • The beliefs shaping your decisions

  • The subconscious patterns driving your behaviour

And until you see that…
Nothing changes.

From Corporate Burnout to Conscious Leadership

Hannah’s journey began in a high-performing corporate environment — one many leaders would recognise.

On paper, everything looked right. But underneath?

Misalignment.
Pressure.
Disconnection.

Like many high performers, she did what most people do: She worked harder; Pushed more; Tried to “fix” the problem. But the problem wasn’t her performance.

It was the system she was playing in and the internal narratives she was unconsciously living by.

Her decision to step away from corporate and build her own coaching business wasn’t just a career move.

It was a shift in awareness. A willingness to ask:

👉🏾 Is this actually aligned with who I am?
👉🏾 Or am I succeeding in a system that no longer fits?

The System You’re Playing In Is Shaping You

One of the most powerful insights from this conversation is this: You cannot separate your performance from the system you’re operating in.

Every system - workplace, culture, team comes with Unspoken rules, Expectations and a socially accepted definitions of success, and over time, we adapt.

We learn how to behave.
What to say.
What gets rewarded.

But rarely do we stop to ask: Is this system aligned with my values or am I contorting myself to fit it?

Because when there’s misalignment, it doesn’t show up immediately. It shows up as a slow burn, quietly building:

  • Burnout

  • Frustration

  • Lack of clarity

  • Feeling stuck despite success

What’s Beneath the Surface: Your Internal System

The external system is only half the story. The deeper work, the work most leaders avoid, sits within.

Through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Hannah introduces a powerful way of understanding ourselves: That we are not one fixed identity. We are made up of different “parts” - each shaped by past experiences, beliefs and emotional patterns.

Parts that try to protect us, try to keep us safe and react in ways that feel automatic. So when you have an outsized reaction… when communication breaks down…when you feel triggered or overwhelmed… that’s not random, that’s a part of you speaking.

If you don’t understand it, it will continue to run the show.

Leadership Begins With Self-Responsibility

This is where the conversation becomes real. Because once you see it… you can’t unsee it. You can no longer blame the environment, the pressure, time or other people.

The moment you recognise,“If I am the problem, I am also the solution”, everything shifts. This is the leadership most people don’t talk about. The kind that requires self-awareness, ownership, relational intelligence and emotional responsibility.

Simply put, you cannot lead others effectively if you don’t understand what’s leading you.

Why High Performers Stay Stuck

High performers don’t stay stuck because they lack intelligence, ambition or capability. They stay stuck because they’re operating in systems that aren’t aligned, they’re driven by unconscious beliefs they haven’t examined and they’re solving surface-level problems instead of root causes

Most importantly: They’ve never been taught to look beneath the surface.

What This Means for Leaders

This conversation is a powerful reminder that:

  • Alignment precedes performance

  • Self-awareness is not optional — it’s foundational

  • You can’t change behaviour without understanding what’s driving it

  • Clarity doesn’t come from doing more — it comes from seeing differently

Real leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about having the courage to ask better questions.

The Invitation

If you’ve been feeling driven… but stuck, successful… but unfulfilled, capable… but unclear, here’s a place to start: Pause for a moment and ask yourself:

👉🏾 What problem am I actually trying to solve?
👉🏾 And is it the real one?

The breakthrough you’re looking for might not come from doing more.

It might come from finally seeing what’s been there all along.
